Rain and snow can definitely put a damper on your outfit options, especially when it comes to shoes. The DMV just got over some large rain storms, but as the winter months are fast approaching, you can never be too prepared.
Two of the classic staples are Hunter rain boots (“Hunters”) and L.L. Bean Boot(“Bean Boots”). Rain boots are self-explanatory, as they are generally made from rubber or PVC, so that they are waterproof. Bean boots are duck boots, which have a rubber sole and a leather upper with laces. I prefer to wear my Bean boots when it is snowing, because the thick rubber sole has ideal traction for walking in slippery areas.
As for sizing, Hunters come in whole sizes and run large, so if you have in between sizes, order the next size down. They come in various styles, ‘Original Tall,’ ‘Tour’ packable, and ‘Original Short,’ to name a few. I have pink ones, the ‘Original Tall’ and red ones, the ‘Tour’ packable. I prefer the packable version because they are less stiff and more comfortable around my calves. I have muscular calves, so Hunters fit just right over a pair of leggings or jeans. The ‘Tour’ also feel slightly shorter than the ‘Original Tall,’ which is nice, because the ‘Original Tall’ hits my knee, so that can be uncomfortable.
I suggest pairing a thicker pair of socks with Hunters, as my feet slide around inside. They sell Welly socks, which are fleece and fold over the top of the boot. The socks are warm, but the look may not be for everyone.
Bean Boots also only come in whole sizes, but the women’s sizing only ranges from 6 to 11. I normally wear a 5.5, so I tried the 6. They were so huge, even the thickest winter socks would have not made them fit. I ordered the Kids’ Bean Boot in a size 2(!) and they fit perfectly. For reference, a Kid’s shoe size 3 is equivalent to a Women’s shoe size 5, so I would say Bean Boots run about 2 sizes too large! I actually prefer the Kids’ version because the boot is more narrow than the Women’s and I like the look of the laces. Note – if you want a pair of original Bean Boots, place your orders now! They are made in Maine, one pair at a time, so they can be backordered for a couple of months.
